The Bolholt Country Park Hotel sits off Walshaw Road in Bury, in fifty acres of parkland, lakes and gardens that were once a cotton-finishing mill — the factory ruins are meadows now, and Bolholt House itself dates back more than three and a half centuries, the birthplace of Sir Henry Dunster, Harvard's first president. There is one function room, the Summerfield Suite, and that is the point: with its own private bar and private gardens it takes 95 for the ceremony and wedding breakfast and 150 in the evening, and one celebration a day is guaranteed by the building itself. Sixty-one en-suite bedrooms mean the party stays, and staying wedding guests get free use of The Stables Country Club in the converted stable block — a 23-metre pool, saunas, a steam room and squash courts.

We know this hotel. We've worked the Bolholt for both a wedding and a big birthday, so we already know the drive in off Walshaw Road and how the Summerfield Suite turns around between the ceremony and the evening.

One room doing the whole day is the thing worth planning around. We set up once, during the turnaround, and stay put — nothing of ours is being assembled while your guests are in the room. The ceremony end of the suite is the styled focal point, so the mirror belongs at the opposite end by the suite's own bar, where people actually queue, with the red carpet along a wall so nobody crosses the dance floor. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket.

Ninety-five sitting down becomes a hundred and fifty in the evening, and we set for the room as it will be at nine o'clock — those extra fifty-five walk into a room they have never seen. The resident DJ carries the music, so we place ourselves as the second thing to do: the mirror or a print pod working alongside the dancing rather than competing with it. The audio guest book wants a quiet side table away from the speakers, and with the whole party staying over, the recordings get played back at breakfast.

The suite's private gardens and the lakes give a photographer real range without anyone leaving the grounds — portraits by the water, groups on the lawn, fifty acres behind you — and Walshaw sits well clear of controlled airspace, so aerial film of the parkland where the mill once stood is straightforward.
