Wyresdale Park is a family-run heritage estate of more than eight hundred acres on the western slopes of the Forest of Bowland, below Nicky Nook Fell at Scorton, with its own boating lake and a wedding complex built entirely of permanent barns. Vows are said in The Chapel — 140 seats, a log burner and arched oak-framed windows — or outdoors in the walled Ceremony Garden beneath a handcrafted oak gatehouse and iron dome, with the Trough of Bowland behind. The White Barn takes 140 for the wedding breakfast beneath its sweeping staircase, and the glass-walled Atrium leads through to the Disco Barn, which takes 200 in the evening — in winter its draped ceilings hang with disco balls like falling stars. Venue hire is exclusive and includes the wedding-night accommodation: the Honeymoon Suite plus the Orchard Yurts, ten glamping yurts and two wooden pods with heated king-size beds. Weddings here run as up-to-three-day celebrations, from a Manor House rehearsal dinner to a farewell gathering in The Shippon.

The Disco Barn is where the mirror belongs — two hundred people and a ceiling built for a party. We set along a wall with the red carpet running to it, so the queue never crosses a dance floor that busy, and it needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket. The Atrium's glass walkway is the route everyone takes between the White Barn and the party, and a selfie pod just off it catches the whole evening's traffic in five foot square without blocking a corridor.

The venue's own running order gives suppliers access from noon the day before, and we use every bit of it: built, levelled, lit and fully tested a day early, so on the wedding day there is nothing of ours left to go wrong. One van, one trip, and we keep to the track rather than the grass — it is a working estate and we treat it like one.

The Chapel and the walled garden are a photographer's morning, and with the yurts included in every hire the party sleeps on the estate — nobody watches for taxis, the dance floor stays full late, and the audio guest book's recordings get played back over breakfast. Scorton also sits well clear of controlled airspace, so aerial film of the barns, the lake and eight hundred acres rising to Nicky Nook is as worthwhile as anywhere we fly.
