Worsley Court House is a Grade II listed hall in the heart of Worsley village, on Barton Road in Salford. Wood panelling runs right through it, with William Morris wallpaper, stained glass, hanging chandeliers, a fireplace, a minstrels' gallery and an ornate raised stage — which is a rare thing for us, because it means the background of every photograph is already doing half the work. We have set up in the Main Hall three times now, across a summer celebration and the Christmas season, so we know how the room behaves once the party finds its feet.

The Main Hall takes 140 for an evening party, 100 theatre style, 80 for dinner or cabaret and 50 for a dinner dance, and it has a permanent dance floor as well as the raised stage. That shapes where we go: the magic mirror sits along the panelled wall to the side of the dance floor with its red carpet leading to it, so the queue never crosses the floor and never competes with a band or a DJ working the stage end. We plan the footprint for the room as it will be at nine o'clock, not as it looks at two.

The Oak Room, at twelve seats, is the quieter half of the building and the natural home for the audio guest book — a vintage telephone on a side table, collecting the messages that never get said over a microphone. It needs no power on the night, makes no noise, and every recording is yours to keep afterwards. For a bereavement gathering we would usually suggest the audio guest book on its own: no flashes, no attendant working the room, no fuss at all.

The Court House is a genuinely broad venue and our kit follows suit. Weddings and civil partnerships (the venue is licensed for ceremonies, booked separately through Salford Register Office), christenings and naming ceremonies, milestone birthdays and anniversaries, presentation and fundraising evenings — and a strong corporate side too, with AV included at no extra cost and the Oak Room as a break-out or private dinner room. For a conference or an away day the digital selfie pod is usually the better fit than the mirror: a five-foot square, no red carpet, instant sharing to phones.

Practically, it is one of the easier venues we work in. Both rooms are ground floor access, so there is no lift and no stair carry, and there is a car park for around sixty vehicles opposite on Barton Road. Junction 13 of the M60 is on the doorstep, a bus stop sits directly outside and Walkden station is roughly two miles away. The late bar runs to 12:30am on Fridays and Saturdays and on Sundays before a bank holiday, extendable to 1am for catered functions, so we simply plan the hire around whatever finish time you have agreed with the venue. Aerial work is the one thing that needs care — Worsley sits under the Manchester airspace shelf and close to Barton aerodrome, so we check the day's notices, request clearance where it is needed and get the venue's sign-off before anything leaves the ground.

We carry £5M public liability insurance, everything is PAT-tested, certificates and a risk assessment go over on request, and a friendly attendant stays with the mirror all night.
