Thornton Lodge sits on Skippool Road in Little Thornton, a country pub tucked away on the edge of the village and just a short stroll from Skippool Creek and the River Wyre. It is part of the Chef & Brewer collection, and it has the feel of a proper local — rustic corners, fires crackling through the winter, a beer garden with picnic tables for the summer, and dogs made every bit as welcome as their owners.

It is also a genuine function venue. Their own functions page covers birthday parties, christenings, anniversaries and engagements, wedding celebrations, leaving dos, Christmas and New Year parties, private dining and conferences or meetings, alongside a thoughtful section on wakes handled with care. The operation is food-led — steaks, Sunday roasts, seasonal specials and their Picky Bits grazing boards, with gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options — so a function here tends to be built around the table rather than around a stage.

For us at CandidCamera, Thornton Lodge is about as local as a venue gets. We are based in Poulton-le-Fylde, roughly a mile and a half away, which means an early setup or a late change on the day is never a drama. The car park is generous enough to take coaches, there are disabled facilities and free Wi-Fi throughout, and last orders are 10pm Sunday to Thursday and 11pm on a Friday or Saturday — a known, tidy pack-down window that lets us work quietly and in step with the bar team.

Which of those earns its place depends on the space you are given, so we always ring ahead to agree the route in and where the nearest socket is rather than turning up and guessing. For a wake or a memorial gathering we will happily bring the audio guest book on its own — a vintage telephone on a side table where people leave the family a spoken message, with no flashes, no props and nothing loud, and every recording kept.

Little Thornton also sits well clear of Blackpool Airport's zone, which makes aerial film here straightforward: the pub in its setting, the creek and the Wyre a short walk away, and the Bowland fells on the horizon. We are CAA-licensed and fully insured, we launch from clear ground and never fly over people, and we still check the day's airspace notices before every flight.
