Thornton Little Theatre has stood at Four Lane Ends since 1938, and it still calls itself what it has always been — a stage for the whole community. It is a Fylde Coast cultural landmark in the truest sense: a working theatre on a town-centre corner in Thornton-Cleveleys, programmed with touring shows, family musicals, local theatre school performances and the amateur companies who have been treading its boards for generations. It is also available for private hire, which is where we come in.

The venue works across two spaces. The Theatre Auditorium — the Main Space — carries a full stage with professional lighting and sound, and is described by the theatre as ideal for productions, shows, presentations and larger events. Alongside it sits the Studio Room and Cafe, the Flexible Space, a smaller room suited to meetings, workshops and rehearsals. Hire is sold in blocks: a full day, mornings from 8am, afternoons from 1pm, or the evening block from 6pm to 11pm, with community and commercial rates published side by side. An in-house technician is available by the hour.

For a celebration, the 6pm to 11pm evening block is the one to look at. The auditorium is the natural home for our magic mirror once the floor is clear — it needs a ten foot by eight foot patch and a single plug, and it looks its best set back from wherever the room is pointing. The Studio Room and Cafe, being the sociable room where people stand with a drink, is where we would put a selfie pod or the audio guest book. Using both rooms together is the trick here: the main event carries on in the auditorium while nobody has to leave it to get their photograph taken.

We are CandidCamera, based in Poulton-le-Fylde, roughly three miles and ten minutes from the theatre door. We bring the magic mirror, digital and print selfie pods, the audio guest book, event photography and CAA-licensed drone work, and everything comes attended — our person sets up, stays with it and runs it all night. That matters at a venue where front-of-house and security are the hirer's responsibility, because it is one fewer thing on somebody's list. We would also rather speak to the theatre's technician about power and positioning before the day than turn up and improvise.

On the aerial side, Thornton-Cleveleys sits around eleven kilometres from Blackpool Airport and comfortably outside its zone, so airspace here is straightforward. What we would not do is assume a launch point — the theatre is on a busy town-centre corner, so we would walk the ground and agree somewhere clear and well away from people before anything leaves the ground.
