The Tithe Barn stands in the courtyard at Browsholme Hall on Clitheroe Road at Cow Ark, an eighteenth-century stone barn restored in 2009 on an estate of more than six hundred acres in the Forest of Bowland. Browsholme Hall itself is the oldest surviving family home in Lancashire, lived in by the Parker family since 1507 and Grade I listed; it stays a private house, used for the ceremony and the drinks reception. The barn keeps its exposed stone, oak beams and flagstone floors, with the Upper Barn a mezzanine above the main floor carrying its own bar and a clear view of everything below. Up to 130 sit down and up to 200 are here in the evening, and beyond the doors there is a courtyard with firepits and a wood-fired pizza oven, four outdoor ceremony spots and a hundred and twenty acres of woodland.
We know this barn. We've brought the magic mirror to weddings at the Tithe Barn, so we already know the run down to the courtyard and how the light falls through the main barn in the afternoon.
One thing here shapes everything we quote: the music stops at midnight and the barn and courtyard are yours until half past, so the last half hour is packing-down time rather than party time. We plan the hire window to end with the music rather than the clock, which means nothing is still glowing in an empty room while everyone says goodbye.
The mirror belongs on the main barn floor where the Upper Barn looks down on it, so the whole room sees it at once rather than finding it in a corner, with the red carpet running along a wall so the queue never crosses the dance floor. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, nothing more. Out in the courtyard, once the pizza oven is lit and the firepits are going, a print pod keeps working while the barn breathes — it catches the people who have drifted outside rather than making them come back in. The audio guest book, meanwhile, wants a quiet side table, and a vintage telephone there collects the messages that never get said into a microphone.
The Italian Steps beneath the yew walk, the Lily Pond with its oak pavilion, the Lonesome Pine in the ancient woodland and the front lawn give our photographers as much range as any venue we cover, with the Hall itself behind the ceremony and the drinks — genuinely a full day's work rather than a half. Cow Ark also sits deep in the Forest of Bowland, well clear of controlled airspace, which makes aerial film of the Hall, the barn and six hundred acres of estate about as straightforward as it gets.
We've put together a free wedding pack for couples marrying at the Tithe Barn, downloadable below. It sizes every option to the barn and the courtyard, lays out the prices in full, and carries BROWSHOLME5 — a venue-exclusive code that takes 5% off anything in it.
