The Out Barn sits at Clough Bottom off Cross Lane at Waddington, a restored seventeenth-century stone hay barn with an elliptical function room grafted onto it, on the Backhouse family's 200-acre working farm. The Oval Room's panoramic windows frame Pendle Hill and the indoor ceremony space is licensed for 156 guests, with outdoor vows available at Pendle View or down by the Fairy Bridge over the stream. Around 150 fills the room. Twenty-seven of your guests sleep on the farm — the seventeenth-century Farmhouse, the Coach House, the Dairy Cottage and five lodges named Hare, Grouse, Fallow, Roe and Robin — and the whole estate goes exclusive, from Friday through to Sunday.

We know this barn. We've worked a wedding at The Out Barn, so we already know the drive down Cross Lane and what the light does through the Pendle Hill glass in the afternoon.

The Friday set-up changes what a supplier can promise here, and it is the single most useful thing about the place. We build, level, light and fully test the mirror the day before rather than in a ninety-minute window on the morning — so on your wedding day there is nothing of ours left to go wrong.

The Oval Room's windows are the best thing in the building and the worst place to stand a mirror, because backlit glass fights it. We set on the stone side of the room instead, which keeps the Pendle Hill view clear for your photographer and gives the mirror a wall that flatters it, with the red carpet running along that wall so the queue forms off the dance floor. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, nothing more. For a smaller or quieter day the selfie pod is the better fit, taking a five-foot square and no red carpet at all.

The audio guest book belongs in the snug or the farmhouse rather than the barn, somewhere people can hear themselves, and a vintage telephone there collects the things nobody says into a microphone. With twenty-seven guests waking up on the farm, those recordings get played back over breakfast and the prints are still on the table at the Sunday brunch. The Fairy Bridge, the birch trees and the stream, meanwhile, are what people forget to budget photography time for — and they are the pictures nobody else at your venue has.
