The Coniston Hotel sits at Coniston Cold near Skipton, a family-run country estate and spa that the Bannister family have looked after since 1969, with seventy bedrooms and a thousand acres of Yorkshire Dales around it. The Bannister Suite is the big room — self-contained, with its own private bar, cloakrooms and a courtyard with a fire pit — seating a hundred and twenty by day and taking two hundred and fifty in the evening on a polished wooden dance floor, with bar last orders at one. Vows can be said in the chapel-style Garnett Room, in seventeenth-century Winston's Barn, or outdoors at The Pillars overlooking the private lake, licensed for up to a hundred and twenty. Beyond the hotel there is a twenty-four-acre trout lake the family have fished for generations, a CPSA Premier Plus shooting ground, Land Rover experiences and the adult-only Nàdarra Spa. They host one wedding a day — just yours.
We know this estate. We've worked a full day at Coniston, so we already know the run in past the lake and what the light does over the water in the hour before your evening guests arrive.
The jump from a hundred and twenty seated to two hundred and fifty in the evening is the thing worth planning around, and it is what shapes where we stand. People queue where the drinks are, so the mirror belongs near the suite's own bar rather than near the door, with the red carpet running along a wall so nobody crosses that polished floor to reach it. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, nothing more. For a smaller or quieter day the selfie pod is the better fit, taking a five-foot square and no red carpet at all.
The courtyard with the fire pit is where half the room ends up by ten o'clock, and a print pod out there keeps working while the suite breathes — catching the people who have drifted outside rather than making them come back in. The audio guest book, meanwhile, wants somewhere off the suite, where a vintage telephone on a side table collects the things nobody says into a microphone; with seventy bedrooms and most of the party staying, those get played back over breakfast.
Your own recommended running order does the planning for us — a one o'clock ceremony, breakfast from three, evening guests from half seven — so nothing of ours is ever being assembled while your guests are in the room. And The Pillars over the lake and Winston's Barn are two completely different backdrops within a few minutes of each other, which is why a photographer here genuinely needs the whole day rather than half of it.
Coniston Cold sits deep in the Dales, well clear of controlled airspace, which makes aerial film of the hall, the lake and a thousand acres of estate about as straightforward as it gets. We've put together a free wedding pack for couples marrying at Coniston, downloadable below — it sizes every option to the rooms here, lays out the prices in full, and carries CONISTON5, a venue-exclusive code that takes 5% off anything in it.
