The Ashcroft is Whitworth's civic hall on Market Street — rebuilt after the fire of 2003 and renamed in honour of Christine Ashcroft, who led that rebuild — and run since 2021 by Rossendale Leisure Trust, with Whitworth Town Council under the same roof. The Main Hall takes up to 250 in the evening and is licensed for civil ceremonies, with a stage, a lighting rig, a sound system and a new six-metre projector screen; the Mayoral Chamber is the intimate licensed ceremony room; and The Lounge takes fifty for christenings, baby showers and wakes. Sixty free parking spaces and full wheelchair access make it one of the easiest venues in the valley to arrive at.

We know this hall. We've worked a full evening at The Ashcroft, so we already know the load-in off Market Street and how the Main Hall feels once the lighting rig is doing its job.

The stage and the big screen give the Main Hall its focal point, so the mirror belongs on the opposite wall — a second thing for the room to gather around, with the red carpet running along the wall so the queue never crosses the dance floor. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, nothing more. A wedding here never leaves the building: vows in the Main Hall or the Mayoral Chamber, then the evening in the same room, and we set up once during the turnaround.

The Mayoral Chamber is the intimate room and a mirror would swallow it — the selfie pod fits it properly at five foot square, and leaves the room's own character as the backdrop. In The Lounge, for a bereavement gathering, the audio guest book is the only thing of ours we would suggest: a vintage telephone on a side table, no flashes, no queue, and the family keeps every recording.

For the big community nights this hall was built for — fundraisers, awards evenings, town celebrations — the print pod earns its keep, putting a print in everybody's hand on the way out with a branded design if the night has a cause on it. And Whitworth sits in open Pennine country well clear of controlled airspace, so aerial film of the hall and the valley is straightforward.
