The Adelphi Hotel

Ranelagh St, Liverpool, L3 5UL, Liverpool, Liverpool, L3 5UL

✓ We’ve worked at this venue before

The Adelphi Hotel has stood on Ranelagh Place since 1914, when Frank Atkinson's building opened with a telephone in every bedroom — thought to be a first in the country — an indoor swimming pool, Turkish baths and two restaurants. It is Grade II listed, holds 402 bedrooms, and sits three minutes' walk from Lime Street, in a city that was then the departure point for the Atlantic. Its function rooms run from the Banqueting Hall, the largest, with a built-in proscenium arch stage and up to 450 on a dinner-dance layout, through the purpose-built Kensington Suite with its own private bar, to the Sefton with its tall windows and deep oak, the daylight-filled Pearce and Derby under their original Edwardian chandeliers, the Crosby with its own bar, and the Empire, which the hotel notes was used in Peaky Blinders.

We know this hotel. We've worked a full day at the Adelphi, so we already know the way in off Ranelagh Place and how differently the Banqueting Hall behaves compared with the suites along the corridor.

The Kensington is the evening room and the one with its own private bar, which is exactly why the mirror belongs in it rather than wherever you sat down — people queue where the drinks are. We set along a wall near the bar with the red carpet running to it, so the queue never crosses the floor. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, nothing more.

The Banqueting Hall is a different job altogether. With 450 on a dinner-dance layout and a proscenium stage already in the room, one unit is not enough: we quote two, set at opposite ends, so nobody crosses the floor to reach us. In the smaller suites the selfie pod is the better answer, taking a five-foot square and no red carpet at all.

The Derby staircase is the shot, and the hotel says so itself — a photographer's five minutes rather than anything of ours, but worth building the running order around, because the light on it goes fast. The Pearce and the Derby are the daylight rooms and where the group shots belong; the Grand Lounge is where the drinks reception goes, and a print pod there works harder than a mirror would. The audio guest book wants a quiet side table away from the band, and with 402 bedrooms in the building most of your party is still here to hear the recordings played back at breakfast.

Ranelagh Place sits well outside Liverpool John Lennon's flight restriction zone, so aerial film here is a matter of planning the launch point and the timing rather than asking permission — and the Adelphi's roofline against the city is a shot almost nobody has. We've put together a free celebration pack for couples and event organisers at the Adelphi, downloadable below — it sizes every option to the rooms here, lays out the prices in full, and carries ADELPHI5, a venue-exclusive code that takes 5% off anything in it.
