Stirk House sits at Gisburn in the heart of the Ribble Valley, a 17th-century Jacobean manor house built from stone originally raised for Sawley Abbey, ivy-clad and standing in 22 acres of its own estate with Pendle Hill on the horizon. We were there twice in December 2024, once for a wedding and once for a celebration, so the Ballroom and the way an evening runs in this house are familiar ground for us.

The Ballroom is the centre of it. It holds up to 250 guests, the venue describes it as one of the largest function rooms in the area, and it has a proper dancefloor. That is where our magic mirror belongs: set along a wall near the floor with its red carpet leading in, so the queue never crosses the dancing. The room is already beautifully dressed, fairy light curtain and all, so we work with it rather than against it.

For quieter corners of the day there are gentler options. The Function Suite and its greenery selfie wall suit our print selfie pod, which needs barely five feet square and sends every guest away with something in their hand. Our audio guest book, a vintage telephone on a side table, works best somewhere calm like the Gallery Suite, The Orchid or a quiet end of Seasons, and it pairs especially well with intimate, elopement and twilight celebrations where there are no speeches and no formal breakfast.

Stirk House is not only a wedding venue, and neither are we. Awards evenings, gala dinners, charity fundraisers and conferences all run here, and for those our digital and print selfie pods and our event photography earn their place: a photographer who can follow a staged, timed running order, and a pod that keeps the room busy between courses.

The 22 acres give a photographer genuine range without anybody leaving the estate, from the landscaped gardens and wildflower meadow to the orchard, the woodland trails and the festoon-lit patio with its lit sycamore. And when the Ribble Valley weather turns, the ivy Conservatory living wall is exactly the fallback the venue's own team already recommends. Gisburn is open countryside well clear of controlled airspace, so our CAA-licensed drone work is straightforward here too, whether that is the manor from above or the estate in autumn colour.
