The Shireburn Arms stands on Whalley Road at Hurst Green, a seventeenth-century inn that has welcomed travellers, walkers and locals for more than three hundred years and now sits at the start of the Tolkien Trail. Vows are said in the Ribble Room, which takes around 110; the Ribble Suite carries the celebration for up to 150 with its own private bar and doors straight onto the terrace and the gardens; and the Games Room, with its pool table and dartboard, looks after the smaller gatherings. Twenty-one bedrooms upstairs — among them the Valley Suite with its freestanding bath by the window and the four-poster Tolkien Suite — mean most of the party stays the night rather than watching the clock for a taxi.
We know this inn. We've brought the magic mirror to weddings at the Shireburn Arms, so we already know how the Ribble Suite works once the tables go back and how quickly people find the terrace when the sun is out.
The jump from around 110 seated to 150 in the evening is the thing worth planning around, and it is what shapes where we stand. The Ribble Suite having its own bar matters more than it sounds: people queue where the drinks are, so the mirror belongs near the bar rather than near the door, with the red carpet running along a wall so nobody crosses the dance floor to reach it. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, nothing more. For a smaller or quieter day the selfie pod is the better fit, taking a five-foot square and no red carpet at all.
Silent fireworks only here, and no lanterns — which is a genuine consideration rather than a footnote, because it means the evening's big moment has to come from inside the room. A mirror by the bar, or a pod that keeps printing until carriages, tends to be what people remember instead. The audio guest book, meanwhile, wants somewhere quieter, where a vintage telephone on a side table collects the messages that never get said into a microphone — and with twenty-one bedrooms above you, they get played back at breakfast.
The south-facing terrace with the valley behind it is the venue's own favourite spot for photographs, and we would not argue: portraits away from the party, groups on the lawn, and the Ribble Valley running away behind you. Hurst Green also sits in open countryside well clear of controlled airspace, which makes aerial film of the inn, the terrace and the Forest of Bowland beyond unusually straightforward here.
We've put together a free wedding pack for couples marrying at the Shireburn Arms, downloadable below. It sizes every option to the rooms here, lays out the prices in full, and carries SHIREBURN5 — a venue-exclusive code that takes 5% off anything in it.
