Samlesbury Hall on Preston New Road was founded in 1325 by Gilbert de Southworth, and its black-and-white half-timbering has watched seven centuries pass — four families, lives as an inn, a school and a weavers' home, priest hides in the walls, and a reputation as Lancashire's most haunted house. Saved from demolition in 1925, it is still owned by the Samlesbury Hall Trust, registered charity 526052, and every event held here helps keep the house open. Couples marry in the Hall's original Chapel (90), the Parlour (30), the Great Hall (120) or outside if the sun shines; 150 sit down for the wedding breakfast and up to 250 arrive for the evening, with an oak-panelled bar and exclusive use of the old Hall — no other wedding on the day. The wedding party sleeps on site: the Victorian Gatehouse reserved for the couple, a hamlet of twenty-five shepherd's huts, and the Southworth Spa with its wood-fired hot tub.

The Great Hall is the room the day revolves around, and the mirror sits against its panelling with the red carpet along a wall — nothing fixed, nothing taped, one ordinary socket, and a queue that never crosses a floor that has been danced on for seven centuries. A hundred and fifty sitting down becomes two hundred and fifty in the evening, and we set for the room as it will be at nine o'clock, because those extra hundred walk into a house they have never seen.

People queue where the drinks are, and here that is the oak-panelled bar — a selfie pod near it works the whole night in five foot square. The Chapel, the Parlour and the priest hides are a photographer's rooms, and this is a venue where a photographer genuinely earns a full day. With the Gatehouse and the shepherd's huts keeping the party on site, the audio guest book's recordings get played back over breakfast.

One thing we put in writing rather than gloss over: aerial filming at Samlesbury Hall needs permission twice — the Hall sits inside BAE Samlesbury's flight restriction zone, and the Trust asks for written consent before any commercial filming on site. We make both applications, we say honestly whether it is on before anything is paid, and the drone element is refunded in full if it cannot go ahead.
