The Royal Exchange Theatre is one of the most photogenic buildings in Manchester, and we say that as people who have worked inside it. A Grade II listed former Cotton Exchange — once the largest trading room in England — with a seven-sided steel-and-glass theatre module suspended inside the Great Hall. Marble columns, glazed domes, and a centrepiece that no set designer could improve on. We have covered two events here, sending back 574 photographs between them, so we know the walk in from St Ann's Square and how the light behaves across that hall.

The Great Hall and Module, hired at up to 400 for conferences and receptions, is where our magic mirror belongs. Set along a wall with its red carpet, the full-length mirror reads beautifully against the Victorian ironwork and the module glowing behind it, and the queue never has to cross the floor. For a wedding or an awards evening in that room, it is the unit we would put forward every time.

The Front Room is the easiest space in the building to work in and the strongest for throughput. Ninety standing, its own bar, its own toilets and a street door straight onto St Ann's Square, which means we load in without ever routing through your foyer. Its windows look into both the square and the Great Hall, giving a selfie pod a backdrop most venues simply cannot offer. In the Theatre itself — 600 in the round, published for 200 to 400-plus conference attendees — we set a digital selfie pod on the route out to the breakout spaces, so a session emptying all at once keeps moving rather than bottling up.

The Exchange Suite is the intimate one: the Cotton Exchange's original boardroom, oak panelling intact, natural light, 25 for private dining, and listed on the venue's own site as suiting wedding ceremonies. Floorspace is tighter there, so a compact print or digital selfie pod is the right call rather than the mirror, with the sweeping staircase off the double-height reception doing the work a backdrop usually has to. The audio guest book suits this building better than most — a theatre is a place built on people telling stories out loud, and a vintage telephone on a side table collects the messages that never get said into a microphone.

Practically, St Ann's Square is pedestrianised and there is no on-site parking, so we agree the unloading window and the entrance with the hires team in advance, take the step-free St Ann's Square entrance and its lift or Cross Street where that suits better, park off site, and are set, powered, tested and glowing at least 90 minutes before doors. Insurance certificates, PAT records and a risk assessment go over before we arrive without anyone chasing. A trained attendant stays with the unit all evening. Event photography is often the strongest single choice here, because one hire can span a boardroom session, a reception under the domes and 600 in the round in a single pass — and drone work, honestly, is not realistic over a listed building in controlled city-centre airspace, so we say so rather than sell it.
