Ribby Hall Village is a village in its own right — 130 acres on Ribby Road at Wrea Green, with wedding suites to suit almost any size of day. The Garden Room looks out over the gardens and holds civil ceremonies for up to 130. The Rowan takes 180 throughout and has its own bar and dance floor, and divides into three when you want a smaller room. The Woodland is the big one at up to 350, with a private entrance, a patio and a stage. And The Summer House sits out in the landscaped gardens for outdoor ceremonies of up to 130. With the Spa Hotel and holiday homes on site, guests stay put rather than watching the clock for a taxi.

We've worked here three times. A wedding with the magic mirror, an evening in The Rowan, and a night of roaming photography with instant prints for a charity ball — so we know the site rather than the brochure: which building, where the load-in is, and which door to use when the main one isn't practical. On a village this size that's worth more than it sounds.

Where we stand depends on your suite. In The Rowan we set the mirror for the room as it will actually be laid out, not as the empty room suggests. In The Woodland, at 350 guests, the mirror wants to be off the main thoroughfare with the red carpet leading to it or half the room never notices it's there. The Garden Room suits daylight and a selfie pod more than a mirror, and the pod needs a five-foot square and nothing more. One small thing we've learned here: tell us the hour you want it open rather than the hour we arrive — at a wedding here the couple asked for the mirror finished and ready by 8pm so guests could use it from 8, so that's what we did.

One honest note on aerial film: Ribby Hall sits close to BAE Warton's controlled airspace, so a drone flight here needs permission from air traffic control rather than just good weather, and that permission is sometimes refused. We're CAA-licensed and insured, we'll always ask well ahead of your date and tell you straight what the answer is, and if we can't fly safely and lawfully the drone element is refunded in full.
