Preston Community Hub on Samuel Street is one of those buildings that does everything. It is the Fishwick and St Matthews community centre, founded in 2020, a registered charity run for the neighbourhood around it, and its two halls host everything from birthdays and milestone parties to meetings, workshops and the big community days that fill the whole building.

We know it well. We have worked the Hub twice — a large community celebration in June 2025 and a summer street party that August — and between those two days we took 782 photographs of people who live around Samuel Street. Days like that are our favourite kind of booking: three generations in one room, a queue that builds the moment word gets round, and nobody leaving without a picture.

The Main Hall is where the magic mirror belongs. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, and it sits best along a wall with the red carpet leading to it so the queue never crosses the dancing. The Small Hall and Conference Room suits the selfie pod instead — barely five feet square, nothing that dominates a room where people are eating and talking. Hire both halls on the Hub's bundled rate and you can have the mirror and the music in one and the food, seating and quieter conversations in the other.

For a gentler gathering, the audio guest book is often the right call on its own: a vintage telephone on a side table that records the messages people never say into a microphone. On a community day it collects voices from grandparents and grandchildren in the same afternoon, and every recording is yours to keep.

We plan around how the building actually runs. Bookings finish and amplified sound stops at 10pm, so an evening here is a tight, well-shaped night — we are set up and glowing long before your start and packed down calmly at the end. The Hub's own food bank and market sessions keep the place busy in the daytime, so we agree the load-in with the team around whatever else is on, exactly as we did for both summer events.
