Manchester Central is the venue we have photographed more than any other. Four very large corporate conferences and awards evenings across February 2025 and February 2026, each one running to somewhere between 1,300 and 1,500 photographs, have taught us how this building works on a live day — where the crowd surges, where the light is kind, and how quickly a capture point has to move when a thousand-plus delegates come out of a session at once.

The Grade II listed former Central Station train shed has been a city landmark for more than 140 years, and Central Hall is still the best backdrop in it: ten thousand square metres, entirely column-free, with the roof running up to 26.38 metres. It takes 10,900 theatre style or 3,600 for dinner on rounds of ten. A magic mirror or selfie pod set against those arches gives you a photograph that could only have been taken in Manchester.

Elsewhere in the building we plan differently. Central Foyer holds 1,200 for a drinks reception with the moveable wall system taken down, and it is where the throughput is, so a unit on the foyer edge catches arrivals and session breaks without ever blocking the route to the halls. Exchange Hall at 1,000 on rounds of ten is the sweet spot for the mirror and its red carpet at an awards evening or gala dinner. The Gallery, 748 square metres of daylight under a 40-metre skylight, is the natural networking room and the best-lit spot in the building for roaming photography. In the Charter Suite and the Exchange break-outs we simply ask for the room number first, because Exchange 9 has a ceiling of only 2.59 metres and the compact pod belongs there instead.

We work to the venue's own rules as standard rather than learning them on the day. Kit arrives inside the tenancy with someone there to receive it, we take the correct goods entrance for the space, we display the vehicle pass, we are unloaded and off site, and we are clear of the hall well before the thirty-minute cut-off. Nothing of ours is left in storage. Certificates and a risk assessment go to the organiser and the in-house event safety team before we arrive, and badge and bag-search procedure on the way in is routine for us.

Aerial work here we will be straight about. The venue sits in the middle of the city, inside Manchester Airport's controlled airspace and surrounded by tall buildings, so a flight is permission-dependent and often not possible. We are CAA-licensed and fully insured and we will do the work of asking properly, and if clearance does not come through the drone element is refunded in full.
