Lancaster Railway Club sits on Morecambe Road on the site of the old Green Ayre station, a short walk from Lancaster city centre. Formally The Lancaster Railway Sports & Social Club, it opened in 1956 and is one of the few buildings left preserving that corner of the city's railway heritage — the line that ran past it was electrified in 1908, the first high-voltage overhead electrification in the United Kingdom, and the station site itself is now a public park.

The room hirers book is the Green Ayre Suite, the club's concert room, named after that station. It takes up to 120 for a casual party or 100 for something more formal, using 72 chairs plus 28 fitted bench seats, and it comes with a fully licensed bar with staff included, a ceiling-mounted projector, Wi-Fi, accessible WCs and tables and chairs as standard. It was fully refurbished in 2012 with a decoration refresh in 2019, and it is available day or evening 364 days a year.

We have been part of three big birthday parties in that room now — March 2025, November 2025 where the magic mirror took 652 photographs across the night, and again in March 2026. It has quietly become one of our favourite landmark-birthday venues, and there is a simple reason for that: the dance floor is a genuine 8.5m by 6.8m, which is a lot of floor for a party this size, so the mirror sits at the edge with its red carpet leading in and the queue never crosses the dancing.

The suite has its own dedicated street-level entrance with disability access, which makes load-in about as easy as it gets — the flight cases wheel straight in from the front, no stairs, no lift, and nothing crossing the members' bar. There are ten parking spaces at the front and more at the side by advance permission. The stage, around 4.7m by 1.8m, is where the speeches and the toast always end up, and it is worth having a photographer there for that moment rather than hoping a phone catches it.

Alongside the magic mirror we bring the digital and print selfie pods, an audio guest book, event photography and CAA-licensed drone work. A pod suits a quieter afternoon gathering or an anniversary better than the mirror — a five-foot square that never dominates a room where people are mostly talking. The audio guest book, a vintage telephone on a side table away from the speakers, is made for the speeches-and-stories side of a landmark birthday. Lancaster sits clear of controlled airspace, so aerial film of the clubhouse and the old Green Ayre site is straightforward, though we still check the day's notices before every flight. The club asks outside suppliers to be insured and PAT-tested, and we are both: £5M public liability, everything tested, certificates on request.
