Lancashire Manor Hotel stands on Prescott Road at East Pimbo, five minutes from junction 26 of the M6, a manor house dated 1770 that now runs some of West Lancashire's best-organised weddings. The Great Hall Barn takes up to 200 guests under its galleried balcony and crystal chandeliers, with its own golden bar, its own kitchen and a patio for the drinks reception; the Lathom Suite takes up to 120 with a movable dance floor and divides down for smaller parties. Both rooms are licensed for civil ceremonies, and every wedding package comes with the resident DJ and the bridal suite.

We've worked a full wedding day here, so we already know how the house runs — the ceremony under the balcony, the turnaround while everyone drifts to the patio, and the moment the evening proper begins under the chandeliers.

The mirror belongs along a wall near the Great Hall Barn's dance floor, set for the room as it will be at nine o'clock once the evening guests have doubled the party. We keep its red-carpet queue clear of the bar run, and we work alongside the resident DJ rather than against him. In the Lathom Suite the movable dance floor decides the layout, and where the suite is divided the compact selfie pod is often the better fit. The audio guest book — a vintage telephone on a side table — collects the messages nobody says on a microphone, played back over breakfast the morning after.
