Holmes Mill

Holmes Mill, Greenacre Street, Clitheroe, BB7 1EB, Clitheroe, Lancashire, BB7 1EB

✓ We’ve worked at this venue before

Holmes Mill on Greenacre Street is a former Clitheroe cotton mill brought back to life as a beer hall, food hall, bar and grill, cinema and hotel all under one roof. The Cotton Room is licensed for civil ceremonies and holds up to 150 seated and 180 in the evening, with its own private bar and the option of reclaimed cinema seats for the ceremony itself; the Spinning Block function space takes 260 for a banquet; the Chimney Room inside the Bowland Beer Hall is the intimate private-dining room, surrounded by the original mill; and the Mill Yard, one of the largest outdoor spaces in Clitheroe, takes the drinks reception. The Bowland Beer Hall runs one of Britain's longest bars at 105ft 4in, with the brewery's own beer made a few steps away, and the Spinning Block Hotel puts 39 bedrooms in the oldest building on the site.

We know this mill. We've worked Holmes Mill for both a wedding and a big birthday, so we already know the load-in off Greenacre Street and how the Cotton Room changes once the ceremony chairs go out.

A room that does the ceremony, the meal and then the party is the thing worth planning around here. We set up once, out of the team's way, and stay put through the turnaround — which is the single most useful thing a supplier can do in the Cotton Room. Because the room has its own bar, the mirror belongs near it rather than near the door: people queue where the drinks are. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, nothing more. For a bigger night in the Spinning Block two units beat one — a mirror at the party end and a pod at the far end — so a room seating 260 never has everyone waiting in the same corner.

Being a town-centre site rules out fireworks and lanterns, which matters more than it sounds: the evening's big moment has to come from inside the building. A mirror by the bar, or a pod printing until carriages, is usually what people actually remember. The Chimney Room is where we would put the audio guest book — quiet enough to hear yourself, and full of the original mill — and a vintage telephone in there collects the messages that never get said into a microphone.

The Mill Yard gives the best outdoor light on site and is worth a photographer's time rather than being left to phones. Clitheroe also sits well clear of controlled airspace, so aerial film of the mill and its chimney, the yard and the Ribble Valley beyond the town is straightforward — we simply plan the launch point and the timing rather than flying over a busy street.

We've put together a free celebration pack for couples and party organisers at Holmes Mill, downloadable below. It sizes every option to the rooms here, lays out the prices in full, and carries HOLMESMILL5 — a venue-exclusive code that takes 5% off anything in it.
