Hobbit Hill stands on Whalley Road at Stonyhurst, a family-run venue in a hundred and fifty acres that fall away to the banks of the River Ribble with Pendle Hill on the skyline and the Tolkien Trail running through — which is where the name comes from. The Wedding Barn is oak-beamed with bi-folding glass doors spanning its entire front onto a large stone-flagged terrace, seating a hundred and thirty by day and taking two hundred and fifty in the evening, with a snug off it built around a stone fireplace and Chesterfield sofas. Vows are said either in the Ceremony Room, whose floor-to-ceiling windows look over the valley, or outdoors in the Round Wood, where a rustic oak pergola and tree-trunk benches seat up to a hundred and thirty under shepherd's-crook lighting. The Shire, the Luxury Lodge and five heated cabins keep the party on site.

The bi-folding doors along the whole front of the barn are the thing to plan around, because the room breathes outward all evening. We set the mirror where the queue spills toward the terrace rather than across the doors, so nothing of ours ever blocks the way out, with the red carpet running along a wall so the queue never crosses the dance floor. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, nothing more. For a smaller or quieter day the selfie pod is the better fit, taking a five-foot square and no red carpet at all.

The Round Wood is a ceremony rather than a party — tree-trunk benches, the oak pergola, and the light going through the trees. That is a photographer's half hour and the best of the day, which is why a half day here is worth starting before the ceremony rather than after it. If anything of ours is going out there, we agree the power for it with the venue in advance rather than turning up and hoping; it is outdoors, and that deserves a proper answer beforehand.

The snug is where people actually sit down and read their prints, so a print pod near it works all night without dominating the barn — and it is where the audio guest book belongs too, quiet enough that a vintage telephone can collect the things nobody says into a microphone. With The Shire, the Lodge and the cabins full, this is a two-night wedding rather than a four-hour evening, which is the real argument for next-morning coverage.
