The Grand Hotel Blackpool sits right on the North Promenade, looking straight out over the Irish Sea, and it is one of the biggest and most flexible event addresses on the Fylde Coast. Eleven function rooms take up to 700 delegates between them, with 278 bedrooms above so nobody has to leave at the end of the night. We are based in Poulton-le-Fylde, twenty-odd minutes up the coast, and we have worked four events here now — a national rally, two large birthday parties and a celebration — so this is a building we know rather than one we are guessing at.

The headline room is the Royal Suite: 22.8 metres by 25.7, a 4.7-metre ceiling and, unusually at that scale, no pillars anywhere. That matters more than it sounds. With 420 people sat down for a dinner dance, nothing blocks the sightline to a magic mirror from any table in the room, so the queue is visible from everywhere and the mirror works the whole floor rather than just the near half. The suite also splits into two, which lets us site kit for the part of the room you are actually using rather than the part you are not.

Our favourite room in the building is the Trafalgar Suite — crystal chandeliers overhead and its own seafront terrace outside. The chandeliers do half our lighting job for us, and the terrace is where a photographer earns their money once the sun drops over the sea. The Queens Suite, licensed for civil ceremonies and looking out to the water, is a natural home for the mirror during a drinks reception: guests come straight out of the ceremony and into it, with no walk to anywhere. Balmoral and Buckingham both seat 200 for a dinner dance with the same generous ceiling height, and in the smaller rooms a selfie pod is usually the better answer — a five-foot square, no red carpet, nothing that dominates a room where people are mostly talking.

Practically, the Grand is one of the easier large venues we cover. Every principal function room is on the ground floor, so there is no ballroom up a staircase and no fighting kit up stairs. There are over 300 parking spaces on site with accessible bays, a ramp entrance and accessible lifts, and three-phase power is listed in every function room — far more than we need, since any of our units runs from one ordinary 13-amp socket. Blackout is available in most rooms, which helps with daytime pod use and keeps glare off the mirror screen.

The audio guest book — a vintage telephone on a side table where guests leave a message — is the quiet surprise at conferences, association weekends and milestone birthdays alike, and every recording is kept and sent on. Aerial film needs planning rather than luck: the hotel is around six and a half kilometres from Blackpool Airport, so we arrange permission well in advance, and if the airspace or the weather says no, the drone element is refunded in full.
