The Clifton Arms Hotel faces Lytham Green from West Beach, a four-star, Grade II listed hotel on a site that was a coaching inn on the Clifton estate three hundred years ago and has carried its own name since 1840. The Ballroom takes the big occasions at up to around 148 seated; the Clifton Suite, where vows are said, looks straight out over the Green; the Talbot Suite has its own private bar and holds the drinks reception without anyone leaving the room; and the Library seats sixteen with views over the Green and the estuary. Forty-eight bedrooms mean most of a party stays the night, and the kitchen holds an AA Rosette.

We know this hotel. We've worked the Clifton Arms for a wedding and for a large black-tie ball, so we already know the load-in off West Beach and how the Ballroom turns from a wedding breakfast into a party.

That turnaround is the thing worth planning around. We set up once and stay put through it, out of the hotel team's way, rather than working around a room being reset twice. One local quirk shapes everything else: the dance floor here is brought in rather than built in, so where it lands changes the whole floorplan — we ask where it is going before we suggest a position, then set the mirror along a wall with the red carpet running to it so the queue never crosses the floor. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, nothing more.

The Talbot Suite suits a selfie pod far better than the mirror — five foot square, no red carpet, nothing that dominates a room where people are mostly talking and drinking. The Library, meanwhile, is where the audio guest book belongs: a vintage telephone on a side table there collects the messages that never get said into a microphone, and with forty-eight bedrooms above, most of your party is still here to hear them played back at breakfast.

The Green, the terrace and the seafront are ten steps from the door and give our photographers real range without anyone having to travel — portraits away from the party, groups on the Green, and the hotel itself behind you. Lytham sits just outside Warton's flight restriction zone, close enough that the day's airspace notices genuinely matter and far enough that aerial film is usually workable when the flight is planned in advance; the hotel with the Green in front of it and the estuary behind is one of the better aerial shots on this coast.
