Charnock Farm sits on Wigan Road at Leyland, and the whole place is exclusively yours for the day. The Barn is the main room — oak beams, tall ceilings and an exposed brick fireplace as its centrepiece, with a real open fire and fairy lighting across the fireplace wall; the packages are built around sixty daytime and a hundred evening guests, with the Farmhouse taking smaller gatherings of forty to sixty. Outside there is a lake with a small family of rescue animals, and Charnock Walk, an avenue of independent shops that includes a bridal shop and a hairdresser. Twelve ensuite bedrooms and five glamping pods mean nobody has to drive home, and the private bar runs to half past midnight.

We know this barn. We've worked Charnock Farm for a wedding and for a celebration, so we already know to come in past the shops as suppliers are asked to, and where the fireplace wall sits once it is lit.

That fireplace wall is the room, and it is already the lit focal point — so the mirror goes anywhere but in front of it. We set along a side wall with the red carpet leading to it, which keeps your photographer's best backdrop clear all night and keeps the queue off the dance floor. It needs a 10ft by 8ft footprint and one ordinary socket, nothing more. Sixty sitting down becomes a hundred in the evening, and we set for the room as it will be at nine o'clock rather than as it looks at four, because those extra forty walk into a room they have never seen.

The bridal preparation suite, full of ornate mirrors, opens at eight in the morning — a photographer's hour and a half before anything else happens, and the single best argument for starting a half day early rather than picking it up at the ceremony. For a smaller or quieter day the selfie pod is the better fit than the mirror, taking a five-foot square and no red carpet at all. The audio guest book wants a quiet side table, where a vintage telephone collects the things nobody says into a microphone, and with rooms and pods on site those recordings get played back over breakfast.

The lake and the rescue donkey and pony are the outdoor set: twenty minutes down there between the meal and the evening gets the pictures nobody else at your venue has. Leyland also sits well clear of controlled airspace, which makes aerial film of the barn, the farmhouse, the lake and the fields behind unusually straightforward here.
